Spotlight: Remarque’s Screen Print Social Hour

Remarque Print Workshop (901 Edith Blvd SE) is now hosting two recurring screen printing events. Screen Print Social Hour, which kicks off this year on Friday, Jan. 23, is a two-hour session hosted by artist Anne Steen that’s designed for teens and adults and covers the basics of screen printing through the creation of a two-color poster. The poster design is a surprise each session, no experience is needed, and snacks and drinks are provided. This January Social Hour will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Upcoming Screen Print Social Hour dates include Feb. 13, March 13, April 10, and May 1, and each session is $35 per person.
“These Social Hour nights are so fun!” says Steen. “Everyone cheers each other on as we all try something new, and I just love watching people lift up the screen to peek at their first print—magic!”
Steen will also host the Open Studio session on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This session, which is $75, welcomes novices as well as practiced screen printers to use the studio to create a unique design with Steen’s guidance. Attendees can join for the whole day or drop in anytime between those hours and make use of Remarque’s supplies and tools, with paper available for additional purchase. 5 Things To Do in January

Feel the Heat
Shake off the cold with the Salsa Bachata Winter Gala on Saturday, Jan. 10. The party, which benefits United We Dance Studios, goes from 7:00 PM to midnight at Hotel Andaluz (125 2nd St. NW). If you’re feeling a little rusty—or just want extra dance time—check out the workshops running from noon until 5:00 PM that same day. Tickets start at $20. To learn more about classes, scholarships, and non-profit collaboration efforts, visit the United We Dance Studios website.

Dust off Your Circus Shoes
On Saturday, Jan. 24, the third annual Sadness, Madness, & Mayhem costume ball comes to El Rey Theater! This “outrageous night of alternative folk music, circus arts, haute haunted fashion, and mystical madness” begins at 7:30 PM and will feature performances from local alt-rock orchestra Dust City Opera, Giovanni String Quartet, and Movement Caravan Circus Troupe. Costumes are highly encouraged, and all ages are welcome. Tickets start at $27.

Pass the Mic
If you didn’t get enough Christmas karaoke with your cousins this year, or if family dynamics provided a particularly generous helping of comedic gold at the holiday dinner table this season, spread the cheer at The Taproom in Old Town for Open Mic Night. Local musician Billy Crooze will host the event on Tuesday, Jan. 13, which goes from 5:00 to 8:00 PM; sign-ups begin at 5:00 PM. The event itself is free and open to all ages. The Taproom (524 Romero St. NW) will also have food and drink specials that night. If you can’t make it to this one, Open Mic Night will also be on the 20th and 27th this month, also from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Bands of Enchantment
The fifth season of Bands of Enchantment is here! Celebrate the Emmy-winning TV show filmed in Albuquerque with an all-ages screening and red carpet event on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave.). This season’s lineup includes local groups like Felix Y Los Gatos, Red Light Cameras, and Slums of Harvard, along with international acts like Pacifica from Argentina, Midnight Generation from Mexico, and La Vida Bohème from Venezuela. Doors open at 6:00 PM; the screening begins at 7:00 PM. Free, but tickets must be reserved ahead of time.

Couple Up
Before it ends on February 8, catch the traveling art exhibition Cara and Diego Romero: Tales of Futures Past at the Albuquerque Museum. Blending works from photographer Cara Romero (Chemehuevi) with those of her husband, potter and print maker Diego Romero (Cochiti), the exhibition—which started at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA and will continue to the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA—explores the complexity and nuances of Indigenous identity and culture across time. The works are blended and organized by themes that include exploring shared mythologies and advocating for environmental consciousness. The Albuquerque Museum is typically open Tuesdays through Sundays, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free general admission on Sunday mornings from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
