Damien Flores is a poet, educator, and radio host whose work is deeply tied to Albuquerque’s culture and history. Born and raised in the Duke City, Flores grew up surrounded by storytelling—whether in the form of poetry, music, or the voices of his community. Inspired by the concept of querencia, the love of the land and its people, his poetry reflects the city’s rich traditions and the urgency of preserving its stories.

Flores first found his creative voice as a student at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Process Writing Institute, where he planned to become a novelist before poetry changed his course. He went on to earn recognition as a two-time NM Hispano Entertainer’s Association Poet of the Year, perform at national poetry slams, and publish two chapbooks, A Novena of Mud and El Cuento de Juana Henrieta. Most recently, he was named as Albuquerque’s seventh Poet Laureate.

Beyond the page, Flores is an integral part of Albuquerque’s creative scene. He curates The Spoken Word Hour on KUNM 89.9 FM, blending hip-hop, slam poetry, storytelling, and music. He also hosts Poetry & Beer, the city’s longest-running poetry open mic, on the first Wednesday of every month at Tractor Brewing Company, Wells Park. Whether on the radio, at live performances, or in the classroom, Flores continues to inspire the next generation of writers and artists.
